SoapBox » Bush vs. Gore

A good friend of mine called me "one of those" when they found out I was voting for Bush. When asked what was wrong with Bush, their first reason was that he wanted to get rid of abortion. Incorrect. To start, just because you're a Republican does not mean you are ultra-conservative and looking to strike down Roe vs. Wade. I am a conservative moderate, just like Bush. When Bush began running for public office in 1994, he always took a hands off approach to this issue. He is of the mindset that if the majority of the public believes this is OK, it's not his call to outlaw it. His Republican party platform is, of course, Pro Life. This does not mean, however, that Bush plans to put super-conservative folks onto the Supreme Court that will eliminate Roe vs. Wade. He will seek to appoint moderate conservatives and status quo will be safe and sound, don't worry. Many Republicans are trying to eliminate Pro-Life from the plank. The Bush Web site talks about this issue very briefly. Notice that striking down Roe vs. Wade isn't on that list? These are listed because they are the minimum required by the Republican plank. Go to Al Gore's Web site and you will be hard pressed to find mention of Pro-Choice. That was my friends' first point for voting Gore. You have to dig deep into his site to find mention of the issue. Conversely, there are Democrats who want to strike Pro-Choice from the democratic plank. So, just because one candidate is Republican and the other is Democrat does NOT mean they are solid either way on this issue. Bush has always emphasized Abstinence Education, contraception, and sex ed programs with the goal of preventing unwanted pregnancies to begin with. Aside from a few points like this, there are not many differences between Gore and Bush. Ralph Nader acknowledges the similarities, albeit negatively. As for Nader's position on this issue, he supports the NOW platform which endorses "safe and legal abortion." Safe for everyone except the unborn kid, I guess. Again, I'm not anti-abortion, but I do feel that you should try to avoid doing this if possible because you are killing someone. This is no different from homicide. How can I support that? Read this story. I guess it all depends on who is doing the killing. So, why do I pick Bush over Gore? Nader lists some of Al Gore's broken promises here. I have known about Bush since 1992 when he had no political aspirations and was owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team. He hired on my favorite ballplayer, Nolan Ryan. Bush was an excellent manager. Skilled. Honest. A Leader. Conversely, I have found Al Gore to be a weasel, a plastic leader, and a poser. He has been in the Senate for years and I have watched him babble on C-Span more often than I'd like. He was raised in hotels in Washington D.C. and is a product of that political system. Check out this photo of Gore with a gun pointing at his head. Nice.

I've been told that a man such as myself has no point of reference as far as this issue is concerned. Incorrect. Those of you who know my sister know that she's a very sweet, wonderful person. But what you don't know is that my parents chose to have two abortions after we were born. These were not life threatening pregnancies. We were not in financial trouble. There were no natural causes for this. This was not an accident. My two unborn siblings were simply not wanted. I will never know who they were. I will never be able to call them brother or sister. They will never be able to fall in love, to build a life, to surf the web, to go to Italy on a whim, etc. They are gone. When my parents are gone, it will be just my sister and I. We were born before Roe vs. Wade was legalized, so technically there was no way they could legally stop us from being born. Who knows what might have happened had the option been there. I might not even be here. It was so easy, after all. I am voting for Bush not because he'll get rid of the right to have an abortion, but because he has the vision to champion alternate solutions such as adoptions and abstinence education. Gore wants to make abortions easy and available to everyone. He wants the government to fund them. He wants to appease the Pro-Choicers at all costs because there are people who are so ignorant that they will vote for Gore JUST BASED ON THIS ONE ISSUE! So, there. If you're voting because of this issue, you are Al Gore's drone. Congratulations.
